HC Deb 26 October 1993 vol 230 c580W
Mr. Gareth Wardell

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many people in Wales are diabetics dependent on insulin injections; and in what form and at what level of disaggregation the information is held.

Mr. Gwilym Jones

The Welsh Health Planning Forum's protocol on physical and sensory disability, which was published by the Welsh Office in November 1991, estimated that there are between 50,000 and 60,000 diabetics in Wales, of whom 30 to 40 per cent. are dependent on insulin injections. This estimate drew on the Welsh Medical Committee's report on diabetes, published the same year.

Further information on the number of people with diabetes, their capacity to cope with everyday life and their views on the management of their care will be available in 1994 from a survey of the health of the people of Wales commissioned by the Welsh Office.
