HL Deb 25 October 1993 vol 549 cc67-8WA
Lord Jenkins of Putney

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is their policy towards the Chinese occupation of Tibet, whether they are taking part in any endeavours to reduce abuses of human rights and what, if any, encouragement can be given to Tibetans hoping to recover their freedom from occupation.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

The situation in Tibet is a matter of serious concern. Both we and our EC partners raise human rights with the Chinese authorities at every suitable opportunity, most recently in the margins of the United Nations General Asembly in New York, and urge them to conform to internationally recognised standards of behaviour. We also encourage the Chinese authorities to enter into a real dialogue without preconditions with the tibetans, including the Dalai Lama.
