Mr. John Townend

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what was the number of(a) uniformed personnel and (b) MOD civil servants on 1 Janaury 1988; and what are the latest figures.

The information is as follows:

United Kingdom Regular Forces 317,300 267,200
MOD Civil Servants (Full-time equivalents) 144,800 (1) 128,000

Note:

(1) Of these some 33,000 are in the administration group, some 54,000 are specialist non-industrial staff and some 41,000 are industrial staff.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many civil servants are working at his Department's offices in Whitehall.

Mr. Aitken

On I September 1993, there were some 3,400 full-time and part-time MOD civil servants working in the Whitehall area.
