HC Deb 25 October 1993 vol 230 cc414-5W
Mr. Thurnham

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the average domestic living space available for each individual in the United Kingdom; what are the comparable figures for other EC countries, for the latest year for which figures are available; and what were the comparable figures 10 years earlier.

Sir George Young

Our most recent estimate, based on the 1991 census, the 1991 English, Scottish and Northern Ireland house condition surveys and the 1986 Welsh house condition survey, is that the average domestic living space available to each individual in the United Kingdom is 32 sq. m. Comparable figures for other EC countries and for 10 years earlier are not available.
