To ask the Secretary of State: for National Heritage by how much Government spending on the arts has changed since 1979.

Mr. Brooke

Government funding for the arts has increased by over 45 per cent. in real terms since 1979. The Arts Council's grant-in-aid this year is £225.6 million.
