HC Deb 22 October 1993 vol 230 c380W
Mr. Bayley

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the gross domestic product per capita in 1990 for the United Kingdom and for each county in the United Kingdom(a) in pound sterling and (b) expressed in US dollars at the exchange rate used to produce the gross domestic product per capita figures in table 31 of the United Nations Development Programme's human development report 1993.

Mr. Nelson

(a) The latest estimates of United Kingdom GDP per capita in 1990 pound sterling were published in the "United Kingdom National Accounts Blue Book 1993 Edition", which is available in the House of Commons Library. The latest figures available for the counties within the United Kingdom are for 1989, and were published in the November 1991 issue of Economic Trends, which is available in the House of Commons Library. The figures for the regions of Scotland were revised earlier this year, and provided in a written answer to the question from my hon. Friend the Member for Southport (Mr. Banks) on 12 February 1993 at columns 802–3.

(b) Estimates of GDP for the regions and counties of the United Kingdom are derived by summing factor incomes, and are therefore available only on a factor cost basis. The conversion to purchasing power parity US dollars, as shown at the national level in the "UN Human Development Report 1993", can be carried out only using GDP estimates at market prices, not at factor cost.
