§ Mr. RaynsfordTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) what proposals he has t6 make changes to(a) section 58, (b) section 59(1), (c) section 60, (d) section 62, (e) section 64 and (f) section 65 of the Housing Act 1985;
(2) what plans he has to introduce new legislation on amendments to existing legislation relating to the provisions of part III of the Housing Act 1985.
§ Sir George YoungIn order to ensure fairer access to permanent social housing for those who need it, the Government propose to reform the homelessness provisions in the Housing Act 1985. We want to restore confidence in the housing waiting list, and to get away from the present position where, in some areas, the only route in to social housing may be to become statutorily homeless. We will be consulting on our proposals in due course, which will cover steps local authorities can take to prevent people from becoming homeless, and to increase the supply of rented housing in co-operation with private landlords.
