HC Deb 18 October 1993 vol 230 cc79-80W
Mr. Godsiff

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what action the United Kingdom Government are taking to ensure that human rights are respected in Sudan.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

We were active at the last sessions of the UN General Assembly and the UN Commission on Human Rights in highlighting the human rights situation in Sudan, and in particular in securing the appointment of a public UN rapporteur. The rapporteur has just visited Sudan, and we await his report.

Mr. Godsiff

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what action Her Majesty's Government are taking to further the peace progress in the Sudan and to bring fighting to an end.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

We have welcomed the initiative of the Kenyan, Ugandan, Ethiopian and Eritrean Presidents to try to encourage dialogue between the Government of Sudan and the factions of the Sudan People's Liberation Army. With our EC partners, we are addressing ways of putting further pressure on the parties to respond positively to mediation efforts.
