HL Deb 18 October 1993 vol 549 c36WA
Lord Reay

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What plans they have for the Royal Naval and Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserves.

Viscount Cranborne

On 17th June we announced proposals affecting the Volunteer Reserves of the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force. The proposals were explained in detail in two consultative documents.

In response, a large number of comments and suggestions were received which have been carefully considered. We have concluded that our proposals should be implemented. As a result there will be a closer integration of our regular and reserve forces.

The Royal Naval Auxiliary Service, and No. 1339 Wing and No. 2623 Squadron of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force Regiment will be disbanded next year. There will be a managed rundown of all the units concerned.

Our work on the operational requirement for the Army's Reserve, and the size and shape of the Territorial Army, is continuing. An announcement will be made as soon as possible.
