§ Mr. Tony BanksTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will give details of all animal products confiscated by the Hong Kong authorities at(a) ports of entry and (b) in restaurants and shops during the past 12 months.
§ Mr. Lennox-BoydIn the past 12 months—from 1 August 1992 to 31 July 1993—the Hong Kong authorities made 198 seizures of suspected endangered animals and animal products at ports of entry and 14 seizures in restaurants and shops. Court proceedings for 89 of the above cases have been concluded and the related animals/animal products confiscated. The remaining cases are either under investigation or awaiting court proceedings. The local legislation provides for mandatory forfeiture of the animals/animal products upon conviction.
