Mr. Vaz

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the present level of prison overcrowding as a percentage for each prison in the United Kingdom.

Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the director general of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

Letter from D. Lewis to Mr. Keith Vaz, dated 30 November 1993: The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question about overcrowding in each prison in the United Kingdom. The table shows those prisons in England and Wales that were overcrowded on 24 November. The percentage overcrowding is calculated from the extent to which population exceeds the certified normal accommodation (CNA) available for use.
