The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question about the medical treatment for Mr. Thomas Mason-Rushton who is at Whitemoor prison.Mr. Mason-Rushton is at present suffering from a chronic infection. A specialist physician with considerable experience of the management of Mr. Mason-Rushton's condition visits the prison at regular intervals. Mr. Mason-Rushton refuses to see this specialist, however, or to become involved in any of the other locally available medical facilities relating to his illness. It would seem that this is because Mr. Mason-Rushton wishes to return to a London prison to visit a particular London hospital. This is despite there being adequate NHS facilities throughout the country for the treatment of his condition.There is 24 hour nursing cover at Whitemoor and a doctor on call around the clock. In the event of an emergency, Mr. Mason-Rushton would be transferred immediately to the appropriate local NHS hospital.
