HC Deb 30 November 1993 vol 233 cc407-8W
Mr. Corbyn

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) if he will make a statement on the zero tolerance campaign against domestic violence being undertaken by the Association of London Authorities;

(2) what resources he will allocate to support the Association of London Authorities zero tolerance campaign against domestic violence.

Mr. Maclean

The response to domestic violence involves a number of Government Departments whose work needs to be co-ordinated at ministerial level. Although such central co-ordination is important, the Government believe that effective action against domestic violence requires the commitment and involvement of local agencies, both statutory and voluntary, working in concert to develop local preventive strategies. The zero tolerance publicity campaign against domestic violence being undertaken by the Association of London Authorities is one such example.

Although the Home Office is unable to assist directly with the financing of the proposed publicity campaign, the issue of raising public awareness in this complex area is one which will be given early consideration by the ministerial group on domestic violence.
