HC Deb 30 November 1993 vol 233 c447W
Mr. Worthington

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (1) what is the Government's assessment of the level of humanitarian needs in Burundi; and what action the Government and the EC are taking to meet those needs;

(2) how much humanitarian aid has been sent from Britain and the EC to Burundi; and of this how much was designated for refugees.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

We have provided £463,000 to United Nations agencies, the International Red Cross movement and Y Care International in response to their appeals for assistance for some 920,000 refugees and displaced Burundis. This includes £50,000 to the International Commission of the Red Cross for those in the north and east of the country. The EC has committed over 8.5 mecu including 3 mecu for those displaced in Burundi.

We remain ready to consider any further appeals for assistance to the region in collaboration with fellow donors including EC and other NGOs.
