To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many patients die each year in acute hospital beds; and what percentage of patients with cancer die in acute hospital beds each year.

In 1989–90, the latest year for which figures are available, an estimated 292,000 people died in national health service hospitals from all causes. Over the same period, 143,000 people died in England from cancer, of whom an estimated 63,000—44 per cent.—died in NHS hospitals.
