Mr. Kirkwood

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what capacity the Skyguard system has for passive monitoring of the height and speed of low-flying aircraft; and what use is made of this capacity when the system is used for covert monitoring of low flying.

Mr. Hanley

The Skyguard radar system is an active system which has no capacity for passive monitoring of the height and speed of low-flying aircraft.

Mr. Kirkwood

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what surveys have been conducted of the actions taken by military aircrew when they become aware of the location or presence of a Skyguard radar monitoring low flying.

No such surveys have been conducted.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what information he has on which nations possess the Skyguard-Oerlikon anti-aircraft system.

Mr. Hanley

Nations which possess this system include: Argentina, Austria, Canada, Egypt, Greece, Iran, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom.
