To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what was the number of suicides recorded in Her Majesty's forces in each of the last five years, and the ethnic breakdown of these.

According to our records, the number of deaths in the armed forces recorded as suicide in each of the last five years is as follows:

Of the 43 personnel who committed suicide in 1991, two were Gurkhas. No further information in respect of the ethnic origins of those who committed suicide is available.
