HL Deb 29 November 1993 vol 550 cc21-2WA
Lord Braine of Wheatley

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What was the level of United Kingdom contributions to the IPPF and UNFPA each year for 1988 to 1993; by what dates they expect to decide the level of United Kingdom contributions for 1994–1995, and what criteria are used when deciding the level of United Kingdom contributions.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Baroness Chalker of Wallasey)

UK contributions to IPPF and UNFPA are as follows:

£thousand
IPPF UNFPA
1988 5,479 5,250
1989 18,255 5,500
1990 17,488 26,000
1991 17,262 7,500
1992 18,000 9,423
1993 [...]137,991 7,000
1 From 1989 onwards the figures include contributions to IPPF Sexual Health Unit (formerly AIDS Unit).
2 £3 million of 1990 contribution actually paid in February 1991.
3 Provisional.

The planned level of United Kingdom contributions to IPPF and UNFPA for 1994–1995 will be set early next year, based on several considerations, including the overall level of resources available for overseas aid; the extent to which the work of UNFPA and IPPF supports the United Kingdom's aid objectives; and a judgment about the value for money these organisations provide when compared with other channels for assisting family planning and reproductive health services in developing countries.
