To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what discussions he has held with ScotRail management relating to the electrification of the east coast main line between Edinburgh and Aberdeen.

I discussed Edinburgh and Aberdeen electrification matters with ScotRail management and Grampian regional council during my visit to Aberdeen in September.

I understand that ScotRail and a consortium of local authorities are jointly funding a study of the feasibility of the scheme. A report on the first phase of the study is expected in spring 1994.
