To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what steps have been taken in the United Kingdom to implement the directive 82/501/EEC on hazardous wastes; and what information he has on its implementation in other European Community countries.

I have been asked to reply.

Directive 82/501/EEC is implemented in the United Kingdom by the Control of Industrial Major Accident Hazards Regulations 1984 (CIMAH). Amending regulations, applying CIMAH to installations for the disposeal of hazardous waste have been approved by the Health and Safety Commission and should come into force by the end of the year.

Information on the implementation of directive 82/501/EEc is published periodically by the Commission of the European Communities.
