HC Deb 25 November 1993 vol 233 c102W
Mr. Wallace

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what estimate he has made of the number of people who evade vehicle excise duty each year; and what is the cost of this evasion to Her Majesty's Treasury.

Mr. Key

The number of unlicensed vehicles in use on the public roads at the end of December 1992 was estimated at just under 1.3 million. The latest information indicates that over 96 per cent. of VED payable is collected. The revenue loss to the Exchequer through VED evasion for 1992–93 was estimated at around £130 million.
