§ Mr. Peter LloydOn Friday 19 November 1993 there were 47,360 prisoners in prison service accommodation and 28 in police cells, giving a total of 47,388 in prisons in custody.
Only end of month figures are available for the earlier years. The figure for 30 November 1988 was 50,365, including 1,025 in police cells. The figure for 30 November 1983 was 43,895, including 551 in police cells.
