HL Deb 25 November 1993 vol 550 cc11-2WA
Lord Ennals

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will support at the current session of the United Nations General Assembly the proposal to ask the International Court of Justice to give an advisory opinion on the legality of the possession and potential use of nuclear weapons.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

No. We believe that the use of nuclear weapons would have to be judged as lawful or not in the light of the particular circumstances in which they were used, and that therefore it would be wrong to burden the International Court of Justice with this hypothetical question.
