§ Mr. MilburnTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list the number of(a) administrative and clerical staff, (b) managerial staff and (c) nursing and midwifery staff employed in the NHS in each year since 1989.
§ Mr. StewartThe information requested for the NHS in Scotland is as follows:
183WNotes:
1 1991, 1992, 1993 figures include the State Hospital, Carstairs.
2 Nursing and midwifery staff include qualified, unqualified and in training nurses. The decrease of numbers between 1991, 1992 and 1993 is wholly accounted for by a decrease in and transfer out of NHS employment of those in training: in particular, Project 2000 student nurses, who are excluded from the figures, are not directly employed by the NHS.
3 1989 data include administrative and clerical staff on grade 18 and above; 1990–1992 data include grades 7 and above.
4 Excludes managerial staff. Includes control assistants and ambulance officers.
5 The increase in numbers in this group is partially accounted for by the transfer of some professional staff to senior manager grades.
