HC Deb 24 November 1993 vol 233 cc45-7W
Dr. Wright

To ask the Secretary of State for Education if he will give figures, in total and by local education authority, on the number of parental appeals on school admission for the last year for which figures are available.

Mr. Robin Squire

In the 1991–92 academic year 37,676 appeals were lodged by parents against the non-admission of their children to the maintained school of their choice. The figures requested, by LEA area, are given in the table. In many cases appeals were withdrawn or settled before being heard by an appeals committee.
