To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations have been made to the Government of Indonesia concerning human rights in East Timor.

In our contacts with the Indonesian authorities, and in the relevant international bodies, we and our European Community partners have, on numerous occasions, underlined our concern that human rights should be respected in East Timor. The matter was raised most recently on 23 November with the Indonesian Minister for Research and Technology during his visit to the United Kingdom.
