15. Mr. Hardy

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what action he proposes to take to ensure that the Royal Air Force shall be equipped with a new aircraft to replace the Hercules; and when he expects the first of such aircraft to enter squadron service.

Mr. Aitken

We are currently evaluating options for both refurbishment of the existing aircraft and purchase of new aircraft. A final decision will be taken on the basis of the option which offers best value for money.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence when invitations to tender for the Hercules replacement programme are to be provided to contractors; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Aitken

We are currently studying the alternatives of extending the life of our existing Hercules fleet or replacing them with new aircraft. We will come to a decision on the way ahead when we have evaluated the results of these studies.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence by what date he proposes to issue invitations to submit tenders for the Hercules replacement; and if he will make a statement.
