Mr. Kenneth Baker

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport (1) what is his policy on the legal agreement between the British Airports Authority and West Sussex county council on a second runway at Gatwick; what plans he has to introduce legislation in respect of the construction of a second runway at Gatwick; and if he will make a statement;

(2) what representations he has received from the chief executive of BAA plc and West Sussex county council regarding the construction of a second runway at Gatwick.

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport (1) if he will publish in theOfficial Report the extracts from the legal agreement between the British Airports Authority and West Sussex county council which rule out a second runway at Gatwick;

(2) if he will publish in the Official Report the extracts from the legal agreement between the British Airports Authority and West Sussex county council which rule out the use of the existing emergency runway at Gatwick airport except when the main runway is closed.

[holding answer 4 November 1993]: The legal agreement between BAA and West Sussex county council regarding a second runway at Gatwick and use of the emergency runway is a matter for the parties concerned. The agreement is publicly available from the county secretary of West Sussex county council.
