Mr. Davidson

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (1) what is the level of butter held in United Kingdom public intervention or private storage facilities under the intervention stock scheme in each of the last 20 months;

(2) what is the level of sales from and purchases to intervention stocks of butter in each of the last 20 months.

Responsibility for this matter is delegated to the Intervention Board executive agency and I have asked the chief executive to reply to the hon. Gentleman direct.

Letter from G. Stapleton to Mr. Ian Davidson, dated 5 November 1993: The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has asked me to reply to your written Parliamentary Questions (2341 and 2346) tabled for answer on 4 November as the matters are within the operational responsibility of this Agency. To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (2341) what is the level of butter held in United Kingdom public intervention of private storage facilities under the intervention stock scheme in each of the last 20 months. (2346) what is the level of sales from and purchases to intervention stocks of butter in each of the last 20 months" The information requested is set out in the attached table. I am sending a copy of this letter, together with a copy of the table, to the House of Commons Library and the Public Information Office.

1 Butter purchased by the Intervention Board and held in store until release is authorised by the EC Commission.
2 Butter in the ownership of public and private companies temporarily removed from the market under aided private storage contracts.
3 This includes 3,621 tonnes of butter made available for free distribution under the surplus food arrangements in 1992.
