What are the allowances payable respectively to Members of the European Parliament and to Members of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
§ Baroness Chalker of WallaseyWith regard to the first part of the noble Lord's Question, I refer him to the Answer given to the noble Lord, Lord Bruce of Donington, on 18 October (cols.WA32–WA33).
With regard to the second part of the noble Lord's Question, the allowances of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe are as follows:
- (i) the members receive a daily allowance of 1,095FF (approx £125) for each complete
WA 137 period of 24 hours at the meeting place. There is an additional 1,095FF (approx £125) payable should the meeting exceed 36 hours; - (ii) members are entitled to a travelling time allowance from the point of departure to the meeting place. This is 548FF (approx £67.50) for each outward and return journey.
- (iii) where a member has to travel a long distance and the flying time by the shortest scheduled flight from London exceeds 9.5 hours, a full day's subsistence for each of the outward and inward journeys is payable. Members are entitled to travel within the cost of the standard Club Class return ticket;
- (iv) a car mileage allowance is also payable should a member decide to travel to and from the meeting by car. This must not however exceed the cost of the equivalent Club Class air fare.
