To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the percentage change since 1979 of(a) consumer expenditure and (b) gross domestic product.

Mr. Nelson

Between 1979 and 1992 real consumer expenditure rose by 370 per cent. and real GDP, at factor cost, rose by 24 per cent.
