HC Deb 04 November 1993 vol 231 cc471-2W
Mr. Davidson

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how much he expects to be saved by a partial withdrawal from Belize; and how this sum was arrived at.

Mr. Hanley

The decision to withdraw the Belize garrison was taken in the light of the improved security situation in Belize and the improved relations with Guatemala and not for financial reasons. The withdrawal will however, save some £4,038,000 in 1994–95 and some £7,587,000 in each year thereafter. The savings come from a reduction of the "in-country" costs on manpower (overseas allowances for United Kingdom personnel and locally employed civilian costs), travel, fuel and utilities, communications, casualty evacuation, local purchase, hirings and works services.
