HC Deb 03 November 1993 vol 231 cc262-4W
Mr. Parry

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what plans he has to reduce unemployment in the Province; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Atkins

Over the year to September 1993 there has been a welcome fall of 2,400–2.2 per cent.—in seasonally adjusted unemployment in Northern Ireland.

Further reductions in unemployment in Northern Ireland will depend on the achievement of higher levels of economic growth leading to increased employment opportunities, and on Northern Ireland industry becoming more internationally competitive.

The Government's strategy to achieve this includes helping companies to identify and remove obstacles to growth; encouraging inward investment; increasing exports; building up management and work force skills; developing and enterprise culture; and supporting innovation and research and development. Help is available in each of these areas for activities which will improve business performance.

Mr. Parry

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make a statement on the latest unemployment figures in the Province.

Mr. Atkins

I refer the hon. Member to the answer I gave the hon. Member for Heywood and Middleton (Mr. Callaghan) on 2 November.
