HC Deb 02 November 1993 vol 231 c169W
Mr. Batiste

To ask the Secretary of State for Health (1) what is the national average perioperative death rate;

(2) what is the perioperative death rate at the Harrogate district hospital; and if she will make a statement;

(3) what was the result of her Department's contacts with individual hospitals with high perioperative death rates;

(4) at which hospital in the United Kingdom the perioperative death rate is the lowest; and what is this rate.

Mr. Sackville

The Department of Health does not collect information on hospital perioperative death rates. The royal colleges encourage clinicians to participate in a national confidential inquiry into hospital perioperative deaths. The results of the inquiry are published in an annual report, copies of which are available in the Library, but the identity of individual hospitals and surgeons remain confidential.
