To ask the Secretary of State for Health what plans she has to relax in 1994–95 the requirement relating to the proportion of the community care special transitional grant which must be spent in the independent sector; and if she will make a statement.

Mr. Bowis

The conditions to be applied to the 1994–95 special transitional grant will be announced in due course.

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if she will make it her policy to establish a special grant to fund the cost of additional care managers, information systems and other unavoidable expenses incurred by local authorities resulting from the institution of community care.

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what sum will be available to fund care in the community in(a) 1993–94 and (b) 1994–95.

Mr. Bowis

In 1993–94 local authorities will receive an additional £565.4 million to fund their new responsibilities. This will rise to a total of £1,274.5 million in 1994–95, of which £735.9 million will be included in a special transitional grant.
