HC Deb 01 November 1993 vol 231 cc50-1W
Mr. Alex Carlile

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what measures his Department is taking to improve road safety in the areas surrounding schools in Wales; and if he will make a statement.

Sir Wyn Roberts

In September, the Government launched the fifth phase of the child pedestrian safety campaign encouraging drivers to reduce their speed in residential areas. Last week, I launched a road safety teaching resource for five to eight-year-olds which included advice on safe journeys to and from school. We have recently installed a number of pedestrian crossings outside schools and are about to commence a variable speed limit trial outside a school on Anglesey. We have also issued advice to local highway authorities on traffic calming measures and 20 mph speed limit zones.
