§ Mr. Peter LloydResponsibility for this matter has been delegated to the Director General of the prison service who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.
Letter from Derek Lewis to Mr. Harry Cohen, dated 1 November 1993:
The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question about the number of pregnant women who were on remand or serving prison sentences in each year since 1987.I am afraid that the information you have requested is not available. As you will know from my reply to you on another Question we do know the number of pregnancies which result in a birth during the time a prisoner is on remand or serving a sentence. But we do not know, for example, the number of women prisoners who are pregnant when they are received into custody but are released before their pregnancy has come to term. A women may choose to keep the fact of her pregnancy confidential between her and the doctor. There is no requirement, nor would it be possible, for central records of pregnancies to be kept.
§ Mr. CohenTo ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many women gave birth while serving a prison sentence or on remand in each of the past five years.

The figures are:
Number 1987–88 75 1988–89 63 1989–90 74 1990–91 65 1991–92 56
In addition there were three deliveries within Prison Service establishments, one in 1987–1988 and two in 1988–1989. We have no records of births having taken place in establishments in recent years.
