To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what has been the cost of employing management consultants to assist in his Department's assessment of applications for trust status in each wave; how many assessments took place; and which were the consultants concerned.

The information is as follows1 Application for NHS Trust status from April 1992: Coopers and Lybrand Deloitte; cost £5,698. 14 Applications for NHS Trust status from April 1993: KPMG Management Consulting: cost £70,500. 12 Applications for NHS Trust status from April 1994: CSL Group; cost £25,318.

The management consultants were engaged, via a tendering process, to provide independent advice on the risk/financial management aspects of the applications.

In February 1993, KPMG Management Consulting undertook a development need study on the designate chief executives and directors of finance in the units/ambulance services invited to apply for 1994 trust status. The cost was £35,250.
