Ms Jowell

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what steps he intends to take to ensure that the independent living fund benefits people who are suffering from terminal illness; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Scott

The independent living (1993) fund is an independent and discretionary trust, governed by a board of trustees. All decisions on matters of policy are a matter for the trustees.

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security how many applications have been received by the independent living fund since 1 April; and how many of these have been approved.

I am informed by the director of the independent living (1993) fund that, as at 27 October, the fund has received 575 applications. Of these, 112 have been approved for payment and a further 289 are in the process of being assessed.

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security how many people have applied to the independent living (1993) fund so far in the current year; and if he will make a statement.
