HC Deb 01 November 1993 vol 231 c40W
Dr. Strang

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, pursuant to her answer of 25 October,Official Report, column 512, how many cattle affected with brucellosis were imported; from which countries and on which date; and if she will make a statement.

Mrs. Gillian Shephard

Two cattle in Anglesey and two in Cheshire which reacted positively to serological tests for brucellosis are known to have been imported. One of these came from the Netherlands in August and three came from France: one in May, one in June and one in July. Brucella abortus has been cultured from post mortem samples only from one French animal imported in June and found on the farm in Anglesey. Detailed epidemiological investigations to determine the source and origin of infection are continuing, and it cannot be assumed that any of these cattle were infected before they were imported.
