HC Deb 01 November 1993 vol 231 c59W
Mr. Gareth Wardell

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if she will publish for the latest year for which figures are available the total income to her Department from the sale of Amoxycillin on prescription to patients of general practitioners who are not exempt from paying prescription charges.

Dr. Mawhinney

The estimated prescription charge income from prescriptions for Amoxycillin in the calendar year 1992 in England was £12.9 million.

Mr. Gareth Wardell

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if she will publish for the most recent year for which figures are available(a) the total number of prescriptions dispensed in England and Wales for Amoxycillin and (b) the total number of prescriptions dispensed in England and Wales to non-exempt prescription charge payers for Amoxycillin.

Mr. Sackville

Information is not available on the number of chargeable prescriptions at individual drug level. Of the 12.6 million prescriptions for Amoxycillin dispensed by community pharmacists in 1992 in England, it is estimated that 3.1 million were issued to patients who are not exempt from prescription charges. There were additionally 3 million prescriptions for Amoxycillin directly dispensed by doctors during the same period; no breakdown of this figure is available by prescription charge category. Information relating to Wales is a matter for my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales.
