Mr. Llew Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement on the progress made in repairs to the A91 complex at AWE Aldermaston.

A contract for the repair of A91 was awarded to NNC Ltd. on 12 October 1993.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if the sludge solidification system to be used for the treatment of radioactive effluent at AWE Aldermaston is now fully operational; and if he will make a statement.

The system is not yet operational.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what discussions he, or staff at AWE Aldermaston, are currently having with(a) Her Majesty's inspectorate of pollution and (b) the Health and Safety Executive regarding the implementation of interim measures in order to ensure the continued operation of the existing liquid waste treatment plant at the Aldermaston site.

(a) HMIP and MAFF, the joint regulators, regularly review with AWE staff the measures required to ensure the continued operation of the liquid waste treatment systems at AWE Aldermaston. In addition, both HMIP and MAFF frequently inspect and comment on the implementation of these measures.

(b) The HSE is currently carrying out a review of health and safety management at AWE. The general topic of waste and decommissioning will be one aspect of this review.
