To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many(a) men and (b) women, were segregated under rule 43 in prisons in England and Wales on 10 May.

Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the director general of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

Letter from Derek Lewis to Mr. Tom Cox, dated 25 May 1993:

The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question about the number of men and women segregated under Rule 43 on 10 May.

The following table shows the number of males and females (both adults and young persons) removed from association under Rule 43 of the Prison Rules and Rule 46 of the Young Offender Institution Rules, in Prison Service establishments in England and and Wales on 10 May.

The above table does not include inmates in designated vulnerable prisoner units where Rule 43 and Rule 46 restrictions do not apply.
