HL Deb 26 May 1993 vol 546 c26WA
Lord Simon of Glaisdale

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many persons who have taken up residence in the United Kingdom since 1945 have been investigated as to their responsibility for war crimes allegedly committed between 1939 and 1945 (a) before the passing of the War Crimes Act 1991, and (b) since the passing of that Act.

Earl Ferrers

There were no investigations before the passing of the War Crimes Act 1991. This legislation was required to give the courts jurisdiction over war crimes committed during the Second World War in Germany or German-held territory by people who are now British citizens or resident in the United Kingdom. Since the passing of the Act, 386 persons have been investigated.
