The Home Secretary has asked me to write to you directly in reply to your recent Parliamentary Question on deaths in custody. Between 1 April 1992 and 31 March 1993, eighty-six prisoners died in prison custody. Since 5 April 1993 nine prisoners have died in prison custody. These figures include deaths from all causes in both directly managed and contracted out operations.
