HC Deb 25 May 1993 vol 225 cc515-6W
Mr. Worthington

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is the current situation of the former Yugoslav republic of Macedonia with regard to international recognition, and qualification for assistance from know-how funds, PHARE funds, the World bank, the International Monetary Fund and European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

With respect to recognition of Macedonia by the United Kingdom, I refer the hon. Member to the answer I gave to the hon. Member for Wellingborough (Mr. Fry) on 23 April at column243. The know-how fund does not extend to Macedonia, but the United Kingdom has committed £2 million in bilateral assistance for emergency aid to Macedonia in this financial year. Macedonia qualifies for assistance from PHARE; 45 mecu has been committed. Macedonia is a member of the IMF and the EBRD, but not yet a member of the World bank.
