To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what definition of a highway bypass is used by his Department.

There is no statutory definition of a bypass. Trunk road bypass schemes remove through traffic from towns and villages on all-purpose trunk roads. Other schemes in the national road programme may have a similar effect.
