To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many(a) men and (b) women committed suicide in each of the last three years for which figures are available; in each case, how many of those suicide victims were homeless; and how many were known to be sufferers from either schizophrenia or another mental illness.

The numbers of(a) men and (b) women who have been recorded as having committed suicide, in each year from 1990 to 1992 are shown in the table. The number of those who have been recorded as having committed suicide and were homeless could be provided only at disproportionate cost. The number who have been recorded as having committed suicide and as being schizophrenic or suffering from another mental illness is not available centrally.

The numbers of (a) men and (b) women who have been recorded as (i) having committed suicide and (ii) having died from an injury where it was undetermined whether that injury was accidentally or purposely inflicted, in 1990–92, England and Wales.
