To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, pursuant to his answer to the hon. Member for Battersea (Mr. Bowis), of 17 May,Official Report, column 2, in what financial year he intends to make funding available for the Robin Hood line; under what powers such assistance will be given; and what discussions he has had about extending the line to Retford.

Assistance will be given either in the form of credit approvals under part IV of the Local Government and Housing Act 1989 or, subject to appraisal, in the form of grant under section 56 of the Transport Act 1968. Discussions are in progress with Nottinghamshire county council about the nature and timing of this funding, and about the case for further extending passenger services on the Robin Hood line.
