To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment how many people were directly employed by each local authority in England and Wales for each year since 1978.

Numbers employed by each local authority in England and Wales from 1979 have been published in the joint staffing watch press releases. These are available in the Library of the House. Information about the numbers employed, by local authority, before 1979 is not available.
